How do local customers find you on Google?

When someone searches for a type of business nearby, Google usually shows a map with a few local listings, then websites underneath. Here's what helps you appear in both, and most of it is free.

1. Set up your Google Business Profile

This is the free listing that appears on Google Maps and in the map results. Claim it at google.com/business, choose the right category, and add your opening hours, phone number, website, and a handful of good photos. Keep it up to date, especially over bank holidays.

2. Keep your details the same everywhere

Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on your website, your Google profile, Facebook and any directories. Mismatched details can confuse both customers and Google.

3. Ask happy customers for reviews

Reviews help people choose you. Ask regulars if they'd mind leaving one, make it easy with a link or QR code, and reply politely to every review, good or bad.

4. Make your website clear about what and where

Say what you do and where you are in your page titles and headings, such as "Fish and chips in Withernsea". List your services in plain words, the way customers would search for them.

5. Make sure it works well on every device

Most local searches happen on a phone. A site that's fast and easy to use on phones, tablets and computers keeps people on the page instead of going back to the search results.

Avoid shortcuts. Paying for fake reviews or stuffing pages with keywords can get you penalised. Doing the basics well, and keeping them up to date, works better over time.
